Americus is Recovering and Rebuilding

RCI and Project C.A.R.E. Help Plan Community Event

Knowing that anniversary dates of major disasters can trigger anxiety and stress for survivors, Project C.A.R.E. is calling together community leaders to plan an event that will hopefully ease the trauma for Americus residents. The tornado that ripped through our community on March 1 of 2007 left a path of devastation from which we continue to recover. There are people to honor, losses to grieve, and achievements to celebrate. It is important that all segments of the community plan together to make it a true city-wide event.

The Rosalynn Carter Institute’s Caregiver Support Center in collaboration with Project C.A.R.E. is happy to act as event coordinator in this planning process. On January 10, the official planning committee held its first planning meeting. The committee is seeking input from anyone in Americus / Sumter County who wants to help with the project. Contact Gayle Alston, RCI’s Director of Community Initiatives, at galston@canes.gsw.edu or 931-2707 if you’re interested in helping to organize this event.

In an effort to reach as many family and professional caregivers as possible, Project C.A.R.E and the RCI staff are committed to taking an active role in any other local activities which might offer the opportunity for outreach. If you know of an anniversary event being planned in the area, please contact Gayle so Project C.A.R.E. can consider taking part.
