Best and Brightest Selected as Pope Fellows at GSW
16 Fellowships Awarded for 2008-09 Academic Year

Sixteen students who will be attending Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) this fall have been selected as recipients of the 2008-09 Pope Fellowships. The Pope Fellowship Program was established in 1996 through an endowment from John and Betty Pope of Americus, to promote a better understanding of the importance of professional and family caregiving. The fellowships are administered by the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving (RCI).

The fellowships provide financial support for outstanding individuals enrolled in the Caregiver Specialist Certificate program at GSW. The Caregiving Specialist Certificate is an interdisciplinary program designed to prepare students for continued study, specialized work, or a career in the caregiving field. This certificate is the only one of its kind in the nation and represents a unique commitment of GSW to prepare leaders in the field of caregiving. Students earn the 18-hour certificate while pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree.Pope Fellows represent a wide variety of fields, including nursing, psychology, business, sociology, education, and pre- medicine.

The RCI received a record number of Pope Fellowship applications this year making the awards very competitive. The Fellows will participate in community projects and will learn about caregiving through their involvement in RCI events such as the Telephone Learning Series sessions, training programs, and the national summit.
