Raymond D. Fowler, PhD

Raymond D. Fowler, Ph.D., is Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Psychological Association (APA). Dr. Fowler received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the Pennsylvania State University and joined the University of Alabama faculty in 1956 where he has successively Director of the psychological Clinic, Director of Clinical Training, and from 1956-1983, Professor and Chairperson of the Psychology Department. He was head of the Psychology Department at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville from 1987-1989 before assuming his present position with APA. As APA's Chief Executive Officer, he directs the operations of a Central Office staff of 500 serving a national and international membership of 155,000 members and affiliates.

Dr. Fowler has conducted research on alcoholism, criminal behavior, and personality assessment. He developed the first widely used computer-based interpretation system for the MMPI, which has been translated into several languages and used extensively in clinical and employment settings in the United Sates and abroad.

He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology and a Distinguished Practitioner of the National Academy of Practice. He has served as a National Vice President of Psi Chi, the Psychology Honorary Society, and as a participant in the President's Commission on Mental Health.

As President of the Alabama Psychological Association, he drafted the state's first psychology licensing law and subsequently served on the first licensing board. As President of the Southwestern Psychological Association, he initiated a series of workshops, which have provided continuing education to several thousand psychologists in this country and aboard. In 1979, Dr. Fowler was the first U.S. psychologist invited to visit the Chinese Institute of Psychology, and he has returned to china on several occasions to lecture and to lead two joint conferences between U.S. and Chinese psychologists.

Dr. Fowler has been active in APA governance since 1965 when he was elected to his first term on the Council of representatives. He is a Fellow of 23 divisions and was President of the Division of Consulting Psychology. Dr. Fowler has been a member of the APA Board of Directors since 1979. He served as treasurer (1983-1987) and as APA's 97th President in 1988.
