ABOUT RCI

John J. Gates, PhD

John J. Gates, PhD, is currently a Director of Homewatch "At Home" Living Assistance, a franchise company established with his two sons in the greater Atlanta metropolitan area to provide personal care services to elderly individuals and to persons rehabilitating or convalescing in their own homes. Formerly, Dr. Gates was Director of Programs at the Collaborative Center for Child Well-being, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the positive development of children. He also served as the Director of the Mental Health Program at the Carter Center supporting the work of former first lady Rosalynn Carter and the Mental Health Task Force. Prior to joining the Carter Center, he worked for many years in the Georgia Department of Human Resources, serving from 1983 to 1990 as the Director of its Division of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse.

He is a member of the Board of The Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving at Georgia Southwestern State University and is President of Community Friendship, Inc., a not-for-profit organization in Atlanta serving people with mental illness. He is also on the Advisory Board of Compeer Atlanta. He is a member of the American Psychological Association and a fellow of the Georgia Psychological Association and has served on the Boards of the National Mental Health Association and the World Federation for Mental Health.

Dr. Gates is co-author of Caring and Competent Caregivers, a book on family and professional caregivers. He is also co-editor of Privacy and Confidentiality in Mental Health Care, a book that explores the legal, technological and social issues involved in efforts to protect the privacy and confidentiality of mental health information.
