ABOUT RCI

Joan M. Lord, PhD

Joan M. Lord is currently the director of College Readiness Policy Connections at the Southern Regional Education Board. She works with the educational leadership of three states (Georgia, Texas, and West Virginia) to foster closer connections between federal and state policy and between various state policies and initiatives, all related to college readiness.

Lord completed an undergraduate degree in English from Vanderbilt University, a master's degree in counselor education from Florida State University and the Ph.D. degree in English Education from Georgia State University. Her career began as a classroom teacher in the Nashville/Davidson County (TN) schools in 1968. She joined the English faculty of Atlanta Metropolitan College in 1975 and then moved to Georgia State University in 1979 in an administrative post. She directed the Developmental Studies program there and served as Assistant Vice President for Academic Programs until 1994. At that time she was tapped to serve as the Interim Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for the University System of Georgia, and again in 1996, as the Interim President of Georgia Southwestern State University. She served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Floyd College (Rome, GA) until her retirement from the University System in 2001.

Lord was awarded an American Council on Education fellowship in 1984 for administrative professional development, and she was recognized in 1995 as an outstanding alumna of the Georgia State University College of Education. While at Floyd College she was awarded the President's Meritorious Service Award for contributions to the University System during her career.

She is married to Gerald D. Lord and she has two daughters. She resides in Atlanta.
