Quality Care Connections Supports the First Practice Community of NQCN

Johnson and Johnson Partners with Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving

Quality Care Connections, a partnership of Johnson and Johnson and the RCI, is supporting the first practice community of the National Quality Care Network (NQCN). This network of researchers and agencies is working to implement evidence-based programs for Alzheimer's caregivers in five diverse communities in New York, Texas, New Jersey, Alabama and Vermont.

The 2007-8 grantees under this program are all implementing evidence-based programs of support for family caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. Recent statistics report that Medicare expenditures for treatment of Alzheimer's disease will increase to $400 billion annually within the next 20 years. Research has proven that the demands of caring for a person with this insidious disease are profound. A recent study found that a third of family caregivers of persons with dementia are suffering from depression. In the coming months we will be posting real time information about these innovative and effective programs so that others considering implementing evidence-based programs in their own communities can learn from both their successes and challenges.

In addition to supporting this network, Quality Care Connections has other goals for 2008. Carrying out the mission of Johnson and Johnson and the RCI to enhance community-based services for caregivers, the QCC goals are:

  • Creation of a national clearinghouse that organizes information on evidence-based caregiver supports including cost, implementation guidelines, level of evidence of effectiveness, and availability of training.
