Averting the Caregiving Crisis: Why We Must Act Now
The Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving will host a National Summit & Training Institute on October 20-22, 2010 on the campus of Georgia Southwestern State University. Titled “Averting the Caregiving Crisis: Why We Must Act Now”, the summit will feature a keynote presentation from Kathy Greenlee, Assistant Secretary for Aging, as well as presentations from other notables, including Anthony (Tony) Rodgers, Deputy Administrator for Strategic Planning and Director of the new Center for Innovation at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and Heather Mahoney-Gleason, Caregiver Support Program Manager for the Veterans Healthcare Administration. The 2010 Summit will highlight efforts to better serve family caregivers, particularly though implementation of evidence-based programs.
The RCI believes that it is critical to quickly make caregiver programs with proven effectiveness widely available to family caregivers. These programs reduce stress and increase knowledge, coping skills and resilience. Without these supports, unfavorable conditions for families, caregivers, care-recipients, professional caregivers and our society will rapidly develop during the next decade, and family commitment to provide care will erode.
The 2010 National Summit will provide an in-depth look at RCI’s recommendations to avert the crisis. You will hear distinguished leaders in the field discuss needs around caregiver health monitoring, professional development, caregiver assessment and triage, and individualizing services to address unique needs and risk. Policy updates reflecting the need for increased leadership and coordination in supporting caregivers as well as International efforts to support caregivers will also be featured.
A pre-conference reception will be held Wednesday night at the Lee Council House and the summit will officially kick off Thursday morning and conclude at noon Friday. A Gala Awards Banquet will be held on Thursday night, where Rosalynn Carter will present the Georgia Caregiver of the Year Awards and the Rosalynn Carter Leadership in Caregiving Award. A guided tour of Plains is planned for visitors staying over on Friday night.
